Where I'm From
by the 6th Grade Class, 10 a.m.

Where I'm from the first thing I hear is

"Get up!" and Mamma's shoes walkin' in the door,
and the steam from my sister's ironing.

Where I'm from I smell sausage and biscuits in the morning,

french toast, scrambled eggs,
fresh air and wet grass, just watered, like every day.

I hear dogs barking where I'm from,

I pass Big George, the pitbull,
the rotweiler, black,
the cocker spaniel and
Prince, the German Shepherd puppy,
and a sheepdog and a chihuahua side-by-side.

Where I'm from the construction workers drill

in the morning, the crows are loud
and my sister and mother are talking on the way to school
and my cousins are saying they like where we're going.
